Encryption and your key
Everything you write in Solarday is encrypted on your device before it’s saved. The key that opens it is kept in your Keychain, and iCloud brings it to your other devices. Here’s how that works, how to keep the key safe, and what a locked item means.
How it works
- The first time you use Solarday, it makes a key. It’s kept in iCloud Keychain, next to your saved passwords.
- Your Intentions, Reflections, Dos and what you save to Future are encrypted with that key before they’re stored. What reaches iCloud can’t be read by Apple, and it can’t be read by us.
- When you sign in on another device, iCloud Keychain brings the key along, and your data opens there too.
To keep the key safe
Settings → your name → iCloud → Passwords. Make sure Sync this iPhone is on.
On iOS 17, the row is called Passwords and Keychain.
It’s on for most people. If you use another password manager, like 1Password, it’s worth checking anyway.
For more on setting up iCloud Keychain, see Apple’s guide.
If sync is off
- Your key stays on one Apple device only. Call it Device A.
- If Device A is lost, erased or replaced, the key goes with it. What you wrote can’t be opened again, by you or by us.
- If you also use Solarday on Device B, it can’t read what Device A wrote.
What a locked item means
If you see a lock and “Can’t read this yet”, this device doesn’t have the key that item was written with.
- Usually it’s temporary. On a new device, or right after you sign in to iCloud, the key can take a few minutes to arrive. Locked items open on their own when it does.
- Solarday never changes or deletes a locked item. It stays exactly as it was.
- If something stays locked, check that Sync this iPhone is on, give it a few minutes, then open Solarday again.
- If it’s still locked after that, the key it was written with may no longer exist. Let us know at support@solarday.app.
FAQ
Can you recover my key?
No. We never see it. That’s what keeps your data private.
Is my data still in iCloud if an item is locked?
Yes. The locked item is stored as it always was. Only the key to open it is missing on this device.
